Venice is an area rich in fossils of all kinds! Here’s a quick look at the background and why that is…

• Over 2.5 million years ago:

  • Venice was the stomping grounds of “The Meg”
  • Expectant mothers came to shallow, nursery-like waters to drop their pups
  • Many pups stayed to feed on whales and dugongs before moving on

  

Tooth Shedding

As the megs fed, they continually dropped and replenished their teeth

• Younger sharks replaced their teeth more often than older ones
• They had three rows of razor-sharp teeth
• Thousands of teeth were shed during a lifetime
• Making Venice the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World”
